Leadership Philosophy

Athletics should develop disciplined, accountable, high-character young people while building programs that communities are proud to support.

Athletics should be an extension of the educational mission of the district. The role of an athletic department is not only to build competitive teams, but to help shape students into disciplined, responsible, resilient young men and women.

Strong cultures are built through:

  • Accountability
  • Communication
  • Relationships
  • Consistency
  • Discipline
  • Leadership

Championship programs are not built through motivation alone.
They are built through daily standards.

Executive-Level Athletic Leadership

Bears Athletic Performance Model

Functional Athletic Development Built Around Sport-Specific Performance

Troy Wallace believes athletic development should prepare athletes for movement, explosiveness, durability, speed, and sport-specific success — not simply weight room numbers. The weight room should support athletic performance, not replace it.

01

Movement Efficiency

  • Running mechanics
  • Change of direction
  • Jumping & landing
  • Body control
  • Core stability
02

Functional Strength

  • Single-leg strength
  • Rotational strength
  • Explosive bodyweight training
  • Medicine ball training
  • Resistance band work
03

Sport-Specific Performance

  • Basketball movement patterns
  • Reaction speed
  • Lateral quickness
  • Vertical explosiveness
  • Sport-specific conditioning
04

Durability & Injury Prevention

  • Mobility
  • Recovery systems
  • Flexibility
  • Joint stability
  • Proper movement mechanics
Athletic development should transfer directly to game performance.

Basketball Development Philosophy

Skill development and basketball IQ win games.

Troy Wallace believes the two most important factors in building elite basketball players are skill development and basketball IQ.

Many programs spend too much time on generic conditioning and not enough time developing shooting, decision-making, footwork, spatial awareness, basketball instincts, and reads and reactions.

Elite Skill Development

  • Shooting mechanics
  • Game-speed shooting
  • Ball handling
  • Footwork
  • Finishing
  • Passing accuracy
  • Weak-hand development

Basketball IQ Development

  • Reading defenders
  • Spacing concepts
  • Offensive timing
  • Defensive anticipation
  • Situational basketball
  • Shot selection
  • Clock management

Competitive Application

  • Live decision-making
  • Competitive drills
  • Advantage/disadvantage
  • Pressure shooting
  • Small-sided games
  • Game-speed reps

Shooting Development

Great Shooting Changes Programs

  • Proper mechanics
  • Footwork consistency
  • Balance
  • Shot preparation
  • Arc and touch
  • Confidence through repetition

“Confidence is built through preparation and repetition.”
